Toxoplasma gondii (Toxo) is a protozoan that widely parasitizes in cells and can cause damage to various organs and tissues. The main infection routes are contact with cats, dogs or other animals infected with Toxoplasma gondii and consumption of contaminated raw eggs, raw milk, raw meat, etc. Toxoplasmosis, also known as toxoplasmosis, mostly presents as latent infection or subclinical process in humans.
Pregnant women are prone to primary Toxoplasma infection due to endocrine changes and reduced immunity. Detection of Toxoplasma gondii IgM (Toxo-IgM) antibodies in serum can be used as a very useful and necessary method for clinical screening of Toxoplasma gondii infection. When pregnant women are infected with Toxoplasma gondii pathogens, antibodies can produce specific IgM antibodies. Since IgM antibodies often appear in the early stages of infection, the detection of IgM antibodies indicates that pregnant women have recent infections. However, it is not perfect to confirm Toxoplasma infection simply by using this indicator, and it needs to be combined with other laboratory tests to confirm the diagnosis.
