TT4 can be used to diagnose hyperthyroidism, primary and secondary hypothyroidism, and monitor the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) suppression therapy. Tetraiodothyronine is the major hormone secreted by the thyroid gland, with molecular weight of 777 and 6-7 days’ half-life. It is formed by synthesis iodination of tyrosine residues of thyroglobulin, which comes into the blood circulation after dissociation from thyroglobulin through enzymatic hydrolysis. Formation and release of TT4 is adjusted by TSH.
